Pulling Focus on Obsession with First AC Casey Schoch

Nucleus M

First AC Casey Schoch recently discussed his experience running the camera department for the film Obsession. The production presented unique technical challenges that required a fast, reliable wireless follow focus system and a resilient camera team.

Technical Setup and Lens Selection

The camera team shot Obsession on the ARRI Alexa 35 in open gate 4.6K. For optics, they utilized a Panavision Ultra Speed prime lens set and a Panavision Primo Zoom. These lenses were matched to allow seamless interchangeability during fast-paced setups.

The primary directive from the cinematographer was to shoot the entire film wide open. This decision left minimal depth of field and required extreme precision from the focus puller.

Overcoming Fast-Paced Environments

Shooting wide open in a fast-paced environment meant there was rarely time to put down tape or write physical marks on the focus wheel.

Schoch relied on the Nucleus-M to manage these constraints. He cited the vibrating marks feature as the primary reason for choosing the system. When someone unexpectedly entered the frame during setup, he could catch their mark in under a second and rely on the haptic feedback, entirely bypassing the need for physical marks.

Range and Motor Reliability

Wireless interference is a common issue on modern sets. Schoch adopted a specific setup for the Nucleus-M to ensure consistent performance. By keeping the motor signal on high and the hand unit on low, the system reliably maintained its connection through multiple physical barriers. Schoch noted the follow focus signal consistently outperformed the wireless video feed, maintaining control even when transmitting through three walls.

Leadership and Advice for First ACs

Managing the technical operations of the camera department involves overseeing the DIT, Second AC, camera operators, and utilities. Equipment issues, wireless interference, and rigging problems are inevitable.

Schoch emphasizes that maintaining a positive mindset is one of the most critical skills for a First AC. Staying calm under pressure ensures the team can efficiently solve technical problems when things go wrong. A positive, collaborative approach encourages the rest of the crew to support the camera department during high-stress situations.
